According to the Hyundai dealer in Medford, the 2021 Elantra is 2.2 inches longer and an inch wider than the outgoing model, with a more streamlined roofline. The 2021 Elantra gets more front headroom, more shoulder room in the front and rear, and 2.3 more inches of legroom in the rear to allow occupants in the rear seats to stretch out. The 2021 Hyundai Elantra seats five passengers and is available in SE, SEL, N Line and Limited trim levels. There's also a new hybrid variant, which comes in SEL and Limited trims. A new high-performance N model isn't covered in this review.
All trims except the N-Line employ a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine generating 147 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque, matched to a CVT. The N-line is powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine producing 201 hp and 195 lb-ft, connected to a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The Elantra Hybrid incorporates a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that generates a total of 139 hp, mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox.
Even the base Elantra SE trim gets a long list of standard features, including selectable drive modes, 15-inch alloy wheels, a height-adjustable driver's seat, cloth seats, a four-speaker audio system, an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and two USB ports. Also standard is the SmartSense safety suite.
The SEL gets standard 16-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, a hands-free trunk release, a six-speaker audio system and satellite radio.
The Limited starts with the features listed above, and adds leather seats, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation, an advanced voice recognition system, rear automatic braking and lane keep assist.
The N-Line comes with the SEL trim's features, plus 18-inch alloys, sport-tuned shocks and springs, leather and cloth upholstery, an enhanced rear suspension and unique styling bits.
As of this writing, the IIHS hasn't published its safety ratings for the 2021 Hyundai Elantra. However, the organization named the 2020 Elantra a Top Safety Pick and awarded it the top score of Good in all crash tests. We expect the 2021 Elantra to receive the same results as last year.
