The SE, SEL and SEL Plus models are powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine developing 147 horsepower and 132 lb.-ft. of torque, paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. The Limited and Ultimate are motivated by a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 175 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque, teamed to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Front-wheel drive is standard on all models, and all-wheel drive is optional. The Kona's AWD system features an advanced rear suspension and a lockable center differential that aids traction when the vehicle is traveling at low speeds in slippery or off-road situations.
The automotive media gives the 2020 Hyundai Kona great reviews, with Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com writing: "In this burgeoning segment, the Kona competes against rivals like the Honda HR-V, Toyota C-HR and Nissan Kicks. EPA-estimated fuel economy for the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is 27/33 mpg for front-wheel-drive models and 26/30 mpg with all-wheel drive.* The 1.6-liter turbocharged engine is rated at 28/32 mpg with four-wheel drive and 26/29 mpg with all-wheel drive.
Standard features include 16-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 7-inch touchscreen and dual front USB inputs. Driver-assistance features that come standard include lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking and a drowsy/distracted driving monitor.
The 2020 Hyundai Kona received an overall safety rating of five-out-of-five stars by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has yet to provide crash test ratings for the 2020 Kona as of this writing. However, the 2019 Kona received the highest score of Good in all crash tests and was named a Top Safety Pick+ model. We expect the 2020 Kona to receive the same ratings.
