The 2019 Hyundai Kona is a subcompact crossover with distinctive styling, outstanding driving dynamics and an available turbocharged engine that accelerates faster than its rivals. While the Kona's distinctive styling may not be appreciated by those who prefer cookie-cutter crossovers, the rest of us enjoy the Kona's unique curb appeal. The folks at the Hyundai dealer serving Philly tell us another reason the Kona is so popular is the value it provides for the money.

For 2019, the Kona gets Hyundai Smart Sense standard. This safety suite features Driver Attention warning, Lane Keep Assist and Forward Collision Avoidance Assist. According to the Philadelphia Hyundai dealer, there are now two USB outlets in the front, as well as some changes in standard and optional features.

It's easy to see why the automotive press gives the 2019 Hyundai Kona such high marks. The experts at Kelley Blue Book wrote: "If you need the size and room of a small crossover SUV, but want something as sporty and well-equipped as it is fun to drive, the 2019 Hyundai Kona covers all the bases. Its powerful yet fuel-sipping turbocharged engine is a bonus, ditto its standard driver assists and long warranty."

The 2019 Hyundai Kona seats five passengers comfortably and comes in four trim levels, listed as SE, SEL, Limited and Ultimate. All models get standard front-wheel drive, although buyers can choose the optional all-wheel-drive system. The SE and SEL trims employ a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine generating 147 horsepower and 132 lb.-ft. of torque, teamed to a six-speed automatic gearbox. Powering the Limited and Ultimate trims is a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder powerplant producing 175 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

With the 2.0-liter four-cylinder block, the 2019 Kona gets EPA-estimated fuel economy of 27 mpg city/33 mpg highway with four-wheel drive, and 25 mpg city/30 mpg highway with all-wheel drive.* The 1.6-liter turbo-four returns 28 mpg city/32 mpg highway with four-wheel drive, and 26 mpg city/29 mpg with all-wheel drive.

Standard features include cloth-covered manually adjustable seats, keyless entry, automatic headlights, cruise control, a rearview camera and a tire-pressure-monitoring setup that can monitor each individual tire. Technophiles will appreciate the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that includes Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and two USB inputs. Hyundai SmartSense (mentioned earlier) is also standard.

Step up to the SEL trim and you'll get 17-inch alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a leather-wrapped shift knob, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, a proximity key with push-button start, and a cargo compartment. The optional SEL Technology Package includes a sunroof, a power driver's seat, fog lights and an Infinity premium stereo system with eight speakers.

The Limited trim gets automatic climate control, leather upholstery and a power driver's seat.

The top-line Ultimate trim comes with pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, an infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen and navigation, a head-up display, a color multi-information screen, a wireless smartphone charging system and parking sensors.
