View our extensive inventory | Hyundai Dealership Serving New JerseyToyota may have created the mass-market hybrid, but with the emergence of the 2017 Hyundai Ioniq, you can bet the Japanese automaker is looking over its shoulder. According to the New Jersey Hyundai dealer, this compact hatchback shares its underpinnings with the Kia Niro crossover and is offered in three distinct flavors: a hybrid, an EV and a plug-in hybrid. We'll cover the hybrid in this review.

If you're in the market for a hybrid, you're looking for excellent fuel economy - and the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid doesn't disappoint. The SEL and Limited models deliver EPA-estimated 55 mpg in combined driving, which bests the Toyota Prius by more than 3 mpg.*

Those who demand even more fuel-sipping prowess can choose the Blue trim level, which gets an outstanding 58 mpg combined, 2 mpg more than the Prius Eco. This is a record for non-plugin hybrid vehicles. As icing on the cake, the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid Blue is the least expensive model in the Ioniq roster.

But the 2017 Hyundai Ioniq isn't just a one-trick pony. The Ioniq has a long list of standard features. There's a full 26.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded down, enough room to carry everything from a complete complement of sports equipment to a large load of groceries. If you're looking for comfort and convenience features, the Ioniq has it in spades, including a nav system, heated front seats, a sunroof, a blind-spot monitoring system and leather upholstery.

The automotive press gives the Hyundai Ioniq a big vote of confidence, with Autoblog writing: "The Ioniq Electric gets a lot right, and its formula could help encourage many holdouts to ditch their tailpipes. This car is easy on the pocketbook and the eyes, offers an industry-beating level of efficiency, and is somehow also a pleasure to drive."

The 2017 Ioniq seats four passengers and is available in Blue, SEL and Limited trim levels. Under the hood, the Ioniq gets a 1.6-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine, teamed to a six-speed automatic gearbox. The gas engine works in tandem with a 32-kW electric motor powered by a li-ion battery pack. All told, this powerplant produces 139 horsepower.
